1 John
First John is an intimate letter written by the Apostle John, focused on assuring genuine believers of their salvation and distinguishing true faith from false claims. The central themes are life, love, and light. John provides three main tests of true Christian faith: the obedience test (Do you obey God’s commands?), the love test (Do you genuinely love fellow believers?), and the doctrinal test (Do you believe that Jesus Christ came in the flesh?). The letter assures believers that they have access to God, that their sins are forgiven, and that they possess eternal life. John encourages fellowship and warns against "antichrists" who deny the true humanity and deity of Jesus.
John affirms the apostles were eyewitnesses of Christ. He teaches that God is light. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and purify us.
Christ is our Advocate (defense attorney) and the atoning sacrifice. John warns against loving the world and its lusts, and urges believers to beware of antichrists.
John marvels that we are called children of God. He distinguishes between the children of God and the children of the devil: true love is demonstrated by laying down our lives for one another.
John instructs believers to test the spirits to discern truth. He confirms the central truth that God is love. If God loved us, we must also love one another.
