1 Kings
First Kings begins with the final years of King David and the transition of power to his son, Solomon, who is famous for his great wisdom and for building the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem. However, after Solomon’s death, the kingdom is tragically divided due to the unwise decisions of his son, Rehoboam, and the ten northern tribes break away to form Israel, while the southern kingdom remains as Judah. The rest of the book follows the history of the divided kingdoms, detailing the reigns of various kings in both Israel and Judah, most of whom were unfaithful to God. A major highlight is the powerful ministry of the prophet Elijah, who dramatically challenges the corrupt king Ahab and the prophets of the pagan god Baal.
Elderly King David is failing. His son Adonijah declares himself king. Bathsheba and Nathan convince David to publicly proclaim and anoint Solomon as the legitimate successor and king.
David delivers his final charge to Solomon, urging him to remain faithful to God's law. Solomon consolidates his power by executing his rivals, Adonijah and Joab, securing his throne.
Solomon makes an alliance with Egypt and marries Pharaoh's daughter. God appears to Solomon in a dream and offers him anything. Solomon asks for an understanding heart to govern (wisdom).
Solomon's fame for wisdom spreads across the world. He writes 3,000 proverbs and 1,005 songs. The chapter details the complex political and administrative structure of his peaceful, expansive kingdom.
