1 Samuel
First Samuel chronicles the transition of Israel from a loosely governed tribal system led by Judges to a unified monarchy under a king. The book introduces Samuel, the last great Judge and prophet, who anoints the first two kings. Initially, the people demand a king, and God grants their request with Saul, a tall and handsome man who is initially successful but soon proves disobedient and unstable. The majority of the book focuses on the rise of David, God's chosen king, starting with his humble anointing by Samuel and his famous victory over the giant Goliath. It describes the intense conflict and rivalry between the jealous King Saul and the righteous David.
King Saul disobeys God by offering a burnt offering himself instead of waiting for Samuel, an act of impatience and presumption. Samuel severely rebukes Saul, stating his kingdom will not endure.
Jonathan, Saul's brave son, and his armor-bearer miraculously attack a Philistine garrison alone, throwing the enemy camp into chaos. Saul nearly kills Jonathan for breaking a foolish oath he made.
God commands Saul to utterly destroy the wicked Amalekites without taking any plunder. Saul disobeys, sparing King Agag and the best livestock. Samuel declares God has rejected Saul as king.
God commands Samuel to go to Jesse of Bethlehem and anoint a new king. Samuel chooses David, the youngest son and a humble shepherd, who is then filled with the Spirit of the Lord.
