2 Kings
Second Kings continues the historical narrative of the divided kingdoms of Israel (North) and Judah (South), recording their gradual and inevitable decline due to ongoing idolatry and disobedience. The book continues the prophetic ministry, featuring Elijah's successor, Elisha, who performs many miracles. Despite the warnings from prophets, the northern kingdom of Israel is conquered and exiled by the Assyrian Empire in 722 BC. The southern kingdom of Judah survives longer but eventually succumbs to the Babylonian Empire in 586 BC, resulting in the destruction of Jerusalem and Solomon’s Temple. The book serves as a powerful illustration of God's faithfulness to His covenant, even in judgment, and the devastating consequences of national sin.
