2 Samuel
Second Samuel focuses entirely on the forty-year reign of David, Israel's greatest king. The book begins with David's anointing as king over all Israel and details his successes in uniting the twelve tribes, conquering Jerusalem (making it the capital), and extending the nation's borders. It also records the establishment of the Davidic Covenant, God’s promise that David’s descendant would forever rule on his throne. However, the second half of the book tragically chronicles David's serious sins, including his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, which leads to great turmoil and violence within his own family and kingdom, showing that even great leaders face consequences for their actions.
The elders of all the tribes of Israel anoint David King over all Israel. David captures the Jebusite city of Jerusalem, renaming it the City of David and establishing it as the national capital.
David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. Uzzah improperly touches the Ark to steady it and is immediately struck dead by God, teaching reverence for the sacred.
David plans to build a permanent temple for God. God refuses the offer but gives David the Davidic Covenant: He promises to establish David’s house and throne forever through his descendant.
David achieves massive military successes, defeating the Philistines, Moabites, Syrians, and Edomites, establishing the complete boundaries of the Promised Land.
