2 Timothy
Second Timothy is Paul’s final letter, written shortly before his execution in Rome, and it is a poignant call for Timothy to remain courageous and faithful in the face of suffering and declining commitment from others. Paul urges Timothy to "fan into flame" the gift of God within him and to be unafraid of persecution, using his own life as an example of faithful endurance. He commands Timothy to faithfully preach the Word of God, even when it is unpopular, and to appoint reliable men who can continue to teach future generations. This letter is a moving testimony to Paul's unwavering faith and a powerful, final charge to a young minister to preserve the Gospel legacy.
Paul encourages Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God and not be ashamed of the gospel. He reminds Timothy of his godly heritage and commands him to guard the good deposit (the gospel).
Paul urges Timothy to entrust the gospel to reliable people. He uses analogies of the disciplined soldier, the obedient athlete, and the working farmer.
Paul warns that in the last days, people will be lovers of self and pleasure. He confirms that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for training in righteousness.
Paul gives a final charge to preach the Word accurately. Paul declares, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith," anticipating the crown of righteousness.
