Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy acts as a powerful final message from Moses to the new generation of Israelites who are ready to enter the Promised Land. The book is structured as a series of three speeches delivered just before Moses's death. In these addresses, Moses reviews the past forty years of wilderness wandering, reiterates the laws and covenants God established at Mount Sinai, and strongly urges the people to remain faithful. He presents a clear choice: obedience to the Law will bring blessing and prosperity in the land, while disobedience will result in curses and exile. Deuteronomy provides crucial context for understanding Israel's history and includes the famous command known as the Shema.
Moses warns Israel not to think their own righteousness earned them the land. He reminds them of their constant rebellion, including the sin of the golden calf right after receiving the Law.
Moses recalls carving the second set of stone tablets. He commands Israel to circumcise their hearts and love the foreigner, because the Lord loves the foreigner and is utterly impartial.
Moses urges Israel to obey God's commands so they can enjoy a prosperous life in the Promised Land. He commands them to bind God's words to their hands and post them on their doorframes.
God commands Israel to destroy all pagan worship sites and bring all their sacrifices and offerings to the one centralized place God will choose (Jerusalem).
