Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy acts as a powerful final message from Moses to the new generation of Israelites who are ready to enter the Promised Land. The book is structured as a series of three speeches delivered just before Moses's death. In these addresses, Moses reviews the past forty years of wilderness wandering, reiterates the laws and covenants God established at Mount Sinai, and strongly urges the people to remain faithful. He presents a clear choice: obedience to the Law will bring blessing and prosperity in the land, while disobedience will result in curses and exile. Deuteronomy provides crucial context for understanding Israel's history and includes the famous command known as the Shema.
God gives laws covering unsolved murder, treatment of female captives in war, the rights of the firstborn son, and the law requiring a criminal to be buried quickly after being executed.
God provides various social and moral laws, including commandments regarding lost animals, modesty (no cross-dressing), and penalties for adultery and sexual assault.
God provides laws concerning who may join the assembly of the Lord (excluding certain foreigners and the eunuch) and gives laws regarding hygiene, sanitation, and honest financial dealings.
God gives laws regarding divorce (prohibiting remarriage to a former spouse after a new marriage), fair wages, loans, and commands to leave gleanings for the poor and foreigners.
