Exodus
Exodus chronicles the liberation of the Israelite people from slavery in Egypt after centuries of bondage. This dramatic narrative highlights Moses, whom God calls through a burning bush to lead His people to freedom. After Pharaoh refuses, God sends ten devastating plagues upon Egypt, culminating in the Passover. Moses then leads the Israelites across the miraculously parted Red Sea, beginning their journey through the wilderness. While encamped at Mount Sinai, God establishes a covenant with them, providing the Ten Commandments and detailed laws for worship and daily life, including plans for the Tabernacle, the portable dwelling place for God's presence among His people.
God provides civil laws concerning slaves (who must be freed after six years), personal injury (including "eye for eye"), and penalties for various violent acts.
God gives laws concerning property rights (theft, damage), social justice (loans, interest), and commands for protecting foreigners, widows, and orphans.
God provides laws concerning justice in the courts (fair testimony), Sabbath observance (land rest), and the three annual feasts (Unleavened Bread, Harvest, Ingathering).
Moses and the elders ratify the covenant with God on Mount Sinai through a sacrifice. Moses is then called up the mountain to receive the stone tablets inscribed by God.
