The Book of Joel begins with a vivid and frightening description of a massive locust plague and a severe drought that devastated Judah, which the prophet interprets as a warning of God’s coming judgment, often referred to as the “Day of the Lord.” This catastrophic event serves as a clear call to the people to mourn, fast, and sincerely repent. The book then broadens its scope to describe the future, final Day of the Lord, when God will judge the nations and restore His people. A key prophecy in Joel is God's promise to pour out His Spirit upon all people, young and old, men and women, a promise that the Apostle Peter explicitly references as being fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in the New Testament.
