John
The Gospel of John is unique among the four Gospels, focusing less on chronological events and more on deeply theological teachings. John's stated purpose is to prove that Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God so that readers "may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name." The book uses seven key "I Am" statements (like "I Am the Bread of Life" and "I Am the Good Shepherd") to reveal Jesus's true identity. John also records seven great signs (miracles) that testify to Jesus's deity. Much of the book covers Jesus’ private teachings to his disciples, culminating in his sacrificial death, victorious resurrection, and commissioning of the disciples.
Jesus humbly washes the feet of His disciples, teaching them to serve. He gives them the new command: "Love one another, as I have loved you."
Jesus comforts His disciples, assuring them He is preparing a place. He declares, "I am the way and the truth and the life." He promises to send the Helper (Holy Spirit).
Jesus declares, "I am the true vine," teaching disciples must remain (abide) in Him to bear spiritual fruit. He warns them that the world will hate them.
Jesus explains that His departure is necessary so the Helper (Holy Spirit) can come to convict the world. He assures them their sorrow will turn to unending joy.
