Judges
Judges covers a chaotic period in Israel's history after Joshua's death, where the tribes failed to completely drive out the Canaanites and repeatedly fell into cycles of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. The book is defined by a repetitive pattern: Israel disobeys God, God allows an enemy nation to oppress them, the people cry out for help, and God raises up a charismatic military leader—a "Judge"—to deliver them. Stories of these Judges, like Gideon, Deborah, and Samson, illustrate both great faith and serious flaws. The book highlights the need for a righteous king, concluding with the famous statement, "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes."
The second half of Judges shifts to moral anarchy. A man named Micah steals silver and builds a shrine and idols, then hires a Levite to serve as his personal priest.
The tribe of Dan, seeking territory, sends spies who persuade Micah's Levite priest to join them. The Danites steal Micah's idols and establish their own corrupt religious center in the north.
A Levite travels to retrieve his concubine, who fled. They stop in the town of Gibeah in Benjamin, where a wicked mob rapes and kills the concubine, leading to outrage across Israel.
The tribes of Israel gather to demand justice against the men of Gibeah. The tribe of Benjamin defends the rapists, leading to a terrible civil war where Benjamin is nearly annihilated.
