Luke
Luke is the longest of the Gospels and, uniquely, was written by a Gentile physician who thoroughly researched his account to provide an orderly, reliable history for a highly educated Gentile official named Theophilus. Luke provides the most detailed accounts of Jesus's birth, including the stories of Mary and the shepherds. It emphasizes Jesus’ universal love and compassion, often highlighting His interactions with marginalized groups like women, the poor, tax collectors, and Samaritans. Luke stresses Jesus's humanity and his perfect prayer life. The book concludes with the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, preparing the reader for the continuation of the story in the Book of Acts, which Luke also authored.
Jesus calls His first disciples after a miraculous catch of fish. He heals a leper and a paralyzed man, and calls the tax collector Levi (Matthew).
Jesus defends healing on the Sabbath. He chooses the Twelve Apostles. He delivers the Beatitudes (blessings for the poor) and the command to love your enemies.
Jesus is astonished by the great faith of a Roman centurion. He raises a widow's son from the dead. A sinful woman anoints Jesus's feet, showing great love and gratitude.
Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower. He calms a storm, casts out a legion of demons, and raises Jairus's daughter from the dead, proving His power over life and death.
