Matthew
Matthew is the first Gospel and serves as a powerful bridge between the Old and New Testaments. Written primarily for a Jewish audience, it strongly emphasizes that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah, the King descended from David. Matthew begins with Jesus’ genealogy, birth, and the famous Sermon on the Mount, which lays out the ethical standards of the Kingdom of Heaven. The book records many of Jesus’ powerful miracles and parables, demonstrating his divine authority. It culminates with Jesus’ death, resurrection, and the Great Commission, where he instructs his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, establishing the foundation for the expansion of the Christian Church to the entire world.
Jesus teaches preparedness for His return with the Parable of the Ten Virgins and the Parable of the Talents. He describes the final judgment of the Sheep and the Goats.
Judas Iscariot betrays Jesus. At the Last Supper, Jesus institutes communion. Jesus prays in agony in Gethsemane, and Peter denies Him three times.
Judas commits suicide. Pilate yields to the crowd’s demands to crucify Jesus. The temple curtain is torn after Jesus dies, and Joseph of Arimathea buries Him.
An angel announces, "He is not here; for he has risen." The religious leaders bribe the guards. Jesus gives the disciples the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations.
