Nahum
Nahum is a short prophetic book focused entirely on the upcoming, complete destruction of Nineveh, the powerful capital city of the Assyrian Empire. About a century before, the Assyrians had repented under the preaching of Jonah, but they had since returned to their cruel and idolatrous ways, becoming a brutal oppressor of God's people. Nahum’s prophecy is intended to bring comfort and reassurance to the people of Judah, who feared the Assyrian military machine. The prophet emphasizes God’s justice and absolute sovereignty, proclaiming that while the Lord is slow to anger, He will ultimately punish the wicked and avenge His people. The prophecy culminates in a vivid, poetic description of Nineveh's catastrophic downfall.
Nahum announces a message of comfort for Judah and judgment for the enemy, Nineveh. God is a refuge for the faithful but will not leave the wicked unpunished.
Nahum describes a vivid, chaotic vision of the invading army and the utter destruction of Nineveh. The city, once a lion’s den of power, is rendered desolate.
Nahum delivers a final indictment against Nineveh, the "city of blood," for its history of violence and treachery. He promises its fall will be celebrated by all its victims.
