Philippians
Written by Paul from prison, Philippians is often called the "Epistle of Joy" because its main theme is finding deep, lasting joy in every circumstance through the strength found in Jesus Christ. Paul expresses heartfelt gratitude for the Philippian believers' partnership and generosity. He addresses the need for unity by urging them to be selfless and humble, using the example of Christ, who emptied himself to become a servant. The book encourages believers to reject anxiety and instead "Rejoice in the Lord always." It emphasizes trusting Christ’s power, famously stating, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians teaches that suffering does not have to diminish our joy in God.
Paul expresses thanks for the Philippians' partnership in the gospel. He declares, "to live is Christ and to die is gain," urging them to live worthy of the gospel.
Paul commands unity and humility, presenting Christ’s self-emptying (Kenosis) as the ultimate example. God highly exalted Christ with the name above every name.
Paul warns against Judaizers (Law-keepers). He counts his past achievements as rubbish compared to knowing Christ. His ambition is to know Christ and press on toward the heavenly goal.
Paul gives final commands: rejoice in the Lord always, and do not be anxious about anything. He assures them that God will meet all their needs according to His riches in Christ.
