Psalms
The Book of Psalms is the primary worship book of the Bible, a collection of 150 sacred songs, prayers, and poems written by various authors, primarily King David. These songs express the full range of human emotion: joy, praise, gratitude, sorrow, anger, doubt, and hope. The Psalms are traditionally grouped into five books, covering different types of worship: psalms of praise, laments, royal psalms, wisdom psalms, and historical psalms. They served as the ancient Jewish hymn book and continue to be a central resource for worship, meditation, and spiritual guidance for both Jews and Christians, teaching believers how to communicate openly and honestly with God in every circumstance of life.
David hides in a cave, crying out for God's mercy. He prays for God's glory to be exalted above the heavens and praises God's love and faithfulness.
David condemns unjust judges who rule wickedly. He asks God to break the power of the wicked and bring a righteous judgment upon them.
David prays for deliverance from those who ambush him at night. He asks God to scatter the wicked nations and be his high tower and refuge.
A lament over military defeat. David asks God to restore their strength and lead their armies to victory against the Philistines and Edom.
