1 Kings 18

1 Kings 18

Three years into the severe drought, Elijah challenges King Ahab and the 450 prophets of Baal (the Canaanite storm god) to a contest on Mount Carmel. Each side prepares a sacrifice, but no fire is allowed. The prophets of Baal dance and cut themselves all day without success. Elijah mocks them. Elijah then drenches his own sacrifice with twelve jars of water and calls upon the Lord. Fire descends from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the water. The people proclaim, "The Lord—he is God!" and Elijah orders the slaughter of the Baal prophets.
