1 Kings 1

1 Kings 1

King David is old and near death. His ambitious son, Adonijah, attempts to seize the throne by declaring himself king and holding a grand feast, supported by Joab the general and Abiathar the priest. Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba quickly inform the elderly David of Adonijah’s plot. David immediately orders Zadok the priest and Benaiah to anoint Solomon as the new king in his stead. Solomon is anointed at the Gihon spring, and Adonijah’s supporters abandon him. Solomon, now king, spares Adonijah but warns him against any future treachery.
