1 Samuel 11

1 Samuel 11

A fierce Ammonite king, Nahash, besieges the Israelite city of Jabesh-Gilead and demands a cruel surrender: he will gouge out the right eye of every man. The citizens send a desperate appeal. When Saul hears the news, the Spirit of God rushes upon him. He cuts up two oxen and sends the pieces throughout Israel, summoning the army. Saul leads a massive force and attacks the Ammonites in a surprise, successful morning raid, completely defeating them. This decisive military victory solidifies Saul's kingship, and the people confirm his rule at Gilgal.
