1 Samuel 14

1 Samuel 14

Jonathan, Saul's courageous son, and his armor-bearer secretly leave the camp to attack a Philistine outpost. Jonathan proposes a sign: if the Philistines challenge them to come up, they will attack, believing God is delivering the enemy to them. The Philistines challenge them, and Jonathan and his man kill twenty soldiers, causing panic and a stampede among the Philistines. Saul, in a rash oath, forbids his weary soldiers from eating any food until the evening. Jonathan unknowingly violates the oath by eating honey, and the soldiers nearly execute him until the people intervene.
