1 Samuel 16

1 Samuel 16

The Lord sends Samuel to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem to anoint a new king from among his sons. When Samuel sees the oldest, Eliab, he assumes he is the chosen one, but God corrects him, saying, "Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." Jesse presents seven sons, but none are chosen. Finally, the youngest son, David, who is tending sheep, is brought in. David is anointed with oil, and the Spirit of the Lord rushes upon David from that day forward.
