1 Samuel 22

1 Samuel 22

David escapes to the Cave of Adullam, where he is joined by his entire family and a growing group of four hundred desperate men—debtors, distressed, and discontented—forming a core army. David secures safe passage for his parents in Moab. The prophet Gad warns David to leave the stronghold and enter the forest of Hereth. When Saul discovers that Ahimelech the priest helped David, he orders his servant, Doeg the Edomite (an Edomite spy), to slaughter eighty-five priests and destroy the entire town of Nob for treason.
