Upon returning to their home base, David and his men find Ziklag burned to the ground and their wives, children, and possessions carried off by the Amalekites. David's men, devastated, consider stoning him. David strengthens himself in the Lord, inquires of God, and receives permission to pursue the raiders. They find an abandoned Egyptian slave who leads them to the Amalekite camp. David and his men recover everyone and everything, dividing the spoils fairly among the 600 men, establishing a principle for future spoil-sharing.
