2 Kings 15

2 Kings 15

This chapter records a dark, unstable period in the Northern Kingdom of Israel with rapid succession and violence, marking the beginning of its decline. Zechariah, the last king of Jehu's line, is assassinated by Shallum, who reigns for only one month before being assassinated by Menahem. Menahem cruelly sacks the town of Tiphsah and, unable to fight off the rising power of Assyria, pays the Assyrian king, Pul, a massive tribute of one thousand talents of silver to secure his throne. The chapter concludes with more wicked kings in both Israel and Judah.

God describes Israel's rampant idolatry as a hot oven. The leaders are condemned for their drunken feasts and political alliances with foreign nations (Egypt and Assyria) instead of trusting God.

Hosea 8

God condemns Israel for breaking the covenant and setting up kings and idols without God's approval. God warns that the enemy will come against them like an eagle for sowing the wind and reaping the whirlwind.
