2 Kings 17

Hoshea, the final king of Israel, is taken captive by Shalmaneser V of Assyria for conspiring against him. After a three-year siege, the capital city of Samaria is captured. The people of Israel are deported and exiled throughout Assyria, bringing the Northern Kingdom to a brutal end. The chapter explains that this disaster happened because Israel persisted in the terrible sins of idol worship, rejection of the prophets, and following the wicked customs of Jeroboam. The Assyrians then repopulate Samaria with foreign peoples, who mix their own gods with the worship of the Lord.
