The victory is soured by the devastating news of Absalom's death. David is heartbroken and publicly weeps, crying out, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom!" Joab confronts the king, harshly criticizing him for mourning the traitor who tried to destroy the kingdom, arguing that David's grief dishonors the men who risked their lives to save him. David, ashamed, stops his mourning and returns to the city gate to meet his people. David generously forgives the curse of Shimei and restores Mephibosheth to his rightful place after hearing his true story.
