2 Samuel 1

2 Samuel 1

An Amalekite runs from Mount Gilboa to David, who is at Ziklag, and reports the complete defeat of Israel and the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan. The Amalekite claims he personally delivered the fatal blow to Saul and brings Saul's crown and armlet to David, expecting a reward. Instead, David expresses deep grief, tearing his clothes. David mourns their death with a beautiful, heartfelt lament, "The Song of the Bow," praising the strength of Saul and the covenant love of his friend Jonathan. David then orders the Amalekite executed for killing the Lord's anointed.
