John writes a letter to his beloved friend Gaius, commending him for his faithfulness and hospitality toward traveling missionaries, even those he didn't know personally. John promises to deal with Diotrephes's malicious talk and wicked deeds when he arrives. He encourages Gaius to continue to imitate what is good.
