Deuteronomy 14

Deuteronomy 14

This chapter reinforces the distinctness of Israel's identity as God's holy people. It prohibits self-mutilation (pagan mourning rites) and reviews the laws concerning clean and unclean foods (dietary laws). The chapter then details the laws concerning the Tithe (a tenth of all produce): the tithe is to be eaten by the worshiper and his family at the central sanctuary, promoting fellowship. Every three years, a special tithe is designated for the Levites, the foreigners, the orphans, and the widows in their towns.
