Deuteronomy 20

This chapter provides the laws concerning warfare. Before going to battle, priests must address the soldiers, encouraging them and assuring them that God is fighting with them. Specific exemptions from military service are granted to those who have recently built a house, planted a vineyard, married, or are simply fearful. Siege warfare is regulated, specifically prohibiting the senseless destruction of fruit trees, showing an early form of environmental concern even in war.
