Genesis 35

Genesis 35

God commands Jacob to return to Bethel (where he first saw the ladder) and build an altar there. Before leaving, Jacob demands that his household get rid of all foreign idols and purify themselves. At Bethel, God appears to Jacob again, reaffirming his new name, Israel, and the covenant promises of land and descendants. Tragically, on the journey, Rachel dies while giving birth to her final son, Benjamin. Jacob buries her on the way to Bethlehem. The chapter concludes with the death of Isaac at the age of 180.
