Genesis 42

Genesis 42

The seven-year famine spreads to Canaan, forcing Jacob to send his ten eldest sons to Egypt to buy grain. Joseph, now the powerful governor of Egypt, recognizes his brothers, but they do not recognize him and bow before him, fulfilling his childhood dreams. Joseph accuses them of being spies and throws them in prison. He releases them but demands they return with their youngest brother, Benjamin, keeping Simeon as a hostage. The brothers reflect on their cruel treatment of Joseph years earlier, believing this trouble is punishment for their sin.
