Genesis 47

Joseph presents his father and five of his brothers to Pharaoh, who welcomes them to settle in the fertile land of Goshen. Joseph secures positions for his brothers as shepherds, a job Egyptians generally disliked, allowing them to remain distinct. As the famine worsens, Joseph manages the crisis brilliantly. He takes all the money, then all the livestock, and eventually all the land of Egypt in exchange for grain, setting up a system where the people would pay Pharaoh one-fifth of their harvest as rent forever.

Solomon's son, Rehoboam, rejects the counsel of the elders and threatens to be harsher than his father. Ten tribes rebel and make Jeroboam king, splitting the kingdom permanently.

Rehoboam attempts to fight the northern kingdom but is forbidden by God's prophet. Rehoboam fortifies cities and the Levites and priests from Israel move to Judah.
