The prophet defends the Lord, asking if God gave Israel a "certificate of divorce" or sold them into captivity, proving that their exile is solely due to their own sins, not God's inability or disloyalty. The Servant speaks again, declaring that the Lord has given him an "instructed tongue" to sustain the weary. The Servant confirms his unwavering obedience despite suffering, saying he has offered his back to those who beat him, knowing the Lord will help him. The chapter concludes by warning those who rely on human sparks that they will lie down in torment.
