They travel to the Israelite camp wearing old clothes, patched sandals, and dry bread, pretending to be travelers from a distant land. The Israelites, failing to consult the Lord, make a solemn treaty with the Gibeonites. When the deception is discovered three days later, Israel must honor the oath, instead making the Gibeonites perpetual servants to the Tabernacle.
