Judges 17

Judges 17

This chapter begins a dark period of moral anarchy in Israel. A man named Micah, from the hill country of Ephraim, steals 1,100 pieces of silver from his mother. He returns it, and his mother melts some of it to create a graven image and an idol. Micah then hires a wandering Levite to serve as his personal priest in his private shrine. This entire episode illustrates the complete failure of the people to follow God's Law, highlighting the chaotic state where everyone did "what was right in his own eyes."
