Judges 9

Judges 9

After Gideon’s death, one of his seventy sons, Abimelech (born of a concubine), conspires with the citizens of Shechem to make himself king. Abimelech massacres his sixty-nine half-brothers on one stone, leaving only Jotham, the youngest, to escape. Jotham stands on Mount Gerizim and tells the people of Shechem a fable about trees trying to choose a king, culminating with the worthless bramble being chosen, prophesying that Abimelech would destroy them. Abimelech rules brutally for three years until internal strife and violence lead to his death by a millstone thrown by a woman.
