Leviticus 12

Leviticus 12

This chapter addresses the ritual impurity a woman experiences after childbirth. Following the birth of a male child, a woman is ritually unclean for seven days, followed by a period of thirty-three days of purification. The period is doubled for the birth of a female child. After the purification period, the woman must bring a burnt offering (for cleansing) and a sin offering (for atonement) to the priest at the Tabernacle. This law emphasizes the pervasive need for ritual cleansing after any connection to the processes of life and death.
