Leviticus 16

Leviticus 16

This is the most important chapter in Leviticus, detailing the annual ceremony of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). On this day, the High Priest, Aaron, performs a complex series of purifications for himself, the Tabernacle, and the people. Crucially, two goats are used: one is sacrificed as a sin offering, and the second, the Scapegoat, has the sins of the people symbolically transferred to its head and is then sent alive into the wilderness, symbolizing the complete removal of Israel's sins from God's presence.
