Matthew opens with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing His ancestry from Abraham through King David, establishing His legal and royal right to the throne of Israel. The chapter then details the supernatural birth of Jesus to Mary, explaining that she conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, after being visited by an angel in a dream, is reassured and obediently takes Mary as his wife, confirming the prophecy that her child would be named Jesus (meaning "the Lord saves").
