Jesus begins His most famous teaching, the Sermon on the Mount, with the Beatitudes, which describe the character and blessings of those who belong to His Kingdom (e.g., the poor in spirit, the peacemakers). Jesus then clarifies that He did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it. He teaches that genuine righteousness goes deeper than mere outward action, demanding purity of heart regarding anger, lust, divorce, and honest speech, setting a standard higher than the religious leaders'.
