Numbers 11

Numbers 11

The people begin to complain about the hardship of the journey, and God responds in anger, sending fire that consumes the outer edge of the camp. The people then weep for the meat they had in Egypt, calling the daily manna "wretched food." Moses, overwhelmed by the responsibility of leading the difficult people, cries out to God for help. God grants his request by placing His Spirit on seventy elders, who then begin to prophesy. God then sends a huge swarm of quail, providing meat, but also sending a severe plague as judgment for their greed.

Hosea 1

God commands Hosea to marry a promiscuous wife, Gomer, to symbolize Israel's spiritual adultery (unfaithfulness) against God. Their children are given symbolic names representing God's judgment.

Hosea 2

God uses the analogy of marriage to condemn Israel's pursuit of idols. God promises to strip Gomer bare but will eventually woo her back in the wilderness, restoring her and making an everlasting covenant of peace.
