This chapter focuses entirely on the tribe of Levi and their specific duties, replacing the firstborn sons of all Israel who were dedicated to God in Egypt. The Levites are divided into three clans—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari—and each is assigned particular responsibilities for moving and caring for the Tabernacle. The Kohathites are responsible for the most sacred objects, including the Ark of the Covenant and the altar. This chapter formally establishes the Levites as God's designated assistants to Aaron and his sons, the priests.
