Psalms 23

The most famous and beloved of all the Psalms, providing comfort and assurance. "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." David describes God leading him to green pastures and quiet waters, restoring his soul. Even when he walks through the darkest valley (the valley of the shadow of death), he will fear no evil, for God is with him, comforting him with His rod and staff. God prepares a feast for him in the presence of his enemies. David concludes with absolute certainty: Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

David's army defeats Absalom's forces in the Forest of Ephraim. Absalom is found hanging by his hair in an oak tree and is killed by Joab and his men, despite David's orders to spare him.

2 Samuel 19

David publicly mourns Absalom, causing the army to feel ashamed of the victory. David reconciles with the tribes of Judah and Benjamin and returns to Jerusalem as king.
