Psalms 55

Psalms 55

A desperate lament written by David after he was betrayed by a close, trusted companion (possibly Ahithophel). David prays to be delivered from the threats of his enemies, wishing he had wings like a dove so he could fly far away and find rest. The betrayal is the deepest pain: "It was not an enemy that taunted me... but you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friend." David casts his burden on the Lord, knowing God will sustain the righteous, but will bring the wicked to the pit of destruction.
