Psalms 74

Psalms 74

A powerful national lament and prayer written after the destruction of the Temple. The people cry out, asking God why He has cast them off forever and allowed the enemy to desecrate the sanctuary. They describe the ruthless enemy burning all the sacred places and destroying every visible sign of God's presence. The people ask God to remember His covenant. They appeal to God's power in creation—dividing the sea and crushing the heads of Leviathan—and ask God to contend His cause and remember the daily reproach of the enemy.
