The Philistines send their giant champion, Goliath, to challenge Israel. Young David, relying on God, refuses armor and kills the giant with a sling and a single stone, leading to Israel's victory.

Jonathan and David form a powerful, enduring covenant of friendship. David's military success makes Saul jealous, leading Saul to attempt to kill David with a spear multiple times.

Saul's murderous rage intensifies, forcing David to flee. Jonathan warns David, saving his life. David escapes Saul's assassins by seeking refuge with Samuel and the prophets in Ramah.

Jonathan confirms to David that his father, Saul, is determined to kill him. Jonathan and David renew their covenant of friendship, exchanging farewells before David permanently goes into hiding.

David flees to Nob, where he lies to the priest Ahimelech and takes the showbread and Goliath's sword. He then seeks refuge in Gath, pretending to be insane to avoid capture.

David gathers his family and a band of 400 desperate, discontented men at the cave of Adullam. Saul, in a fit of paranoia, orders the execution of Ahimelech and all the priests of Nob.

David seeks God’s guidance and rescues the town of Keilah from the Philistines. Saul pursues David relentlessly, but Jonathan finds David and encourages him, reaffirming their covenant.

Saul pursues David into the wilderness of Engedi. David finds Saul sleeping in a cave and cuts off a piece of his robe but refuses to harm him, showing respect for the Lord’s anointed king.

The prophet Samuel dies. David sends men to the rich fool Nabal for supplies. Nabal rudely refuses, and David prepares to attack, but Abigail, Nabal's wise wife, intervenes and saves her household.

David again finds Saul asleep and refuses to kill him, taking only Saul’s spear and water jug as proof that he spared his life for a second time, demonstrating his integrity.

Tired of running, David flees Israel and seeks refuge with the Philistine king Achish in Gath. Achish gives David the town of Ziklag, where David lives for sixteen months as a double agent.

The Philistines prepare to attack Israel, forcing David to march with them. Saul, terrified of the battle and unable to hear from God, consults a medium at Endor, who raises the spirit of Samuel.
