The tribes of Israel anoint David King over all Israel in Hebron. David captures the Jebusite city of Jerusalem, and the chapter lists the first three of his mighty men.

The Ammonites insult David's envoys, leading to war. David defeats the Ammonites and the Arameans (Syrians), further expanding and securing the boundaries of his kingdom.

David's army defeats the Ammonites, destroying Rabbah. David's mighty men continue to fight the Philistines, defeating the giants and securing Israel's military dominance.

Satan incites David to take a census of Israel, a sin born of pride. God sends a plague that kills 70,000 men. David chooses the site for the future Temple on the threshing floor of Ornan.

David gathers vast quantities of material—iron, bronze, timber, and marble—for the future Temple. David charges his son Solomon to build the Temple, urging him to be strong and courageous.
