Genesis
The foundational book of the Bible, Genesis tells the story of creation, beginning with God speaking the universe into existence and forming the first humans, Adam and Eve. It quickly moves to the entrance of sin into the world, the devastating global flood, and the covenant God made with Noah. The central part of Genesis focuses on the foundational stories of Israel’s ancestors: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (who was renamed Israel). Abraham’s faith leads to God’s promise that his descendants will become a great nation and inherit a promised land. The book concludes with Jacob’s twelve sons, the start of the twelve tribes, settling in Egypt during a famine, setting the stage for the next book.

Pharaoh dreams of seven fat cows and seven skinny cows. Joseph interprets the dreams as seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, leading Pharaoh to make Joseph Second-in-Command of all Egypt.
The famine forces Joseph's brothers to travel to Egypt for grain. They bow to Joseph (fulfilling his dreams) but do not recognize him. Joseph tests them and keeps Simeon hostage.
Jacob reluctantly allows Benjamin to go to Egypt. Joseph is deeply moved to see his full brother and hosts a feast, but still keeps his identity a secret from them.
Joseph plants his silver cup in Benjamin's sack to test his brothers. Judah steps forward with a passionate plea, offering himself as a slave in Benjamin's place.
